2024 Memorial Day Ceremony

Sergeant Major Matthew G. King, USMC

Born in Pontiac, MI. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on 26 June 2000 and reported to MCRD, Parris Island, SC. He then attended Marine Combat Training in Camp Geiger, NC. Upon graduation, Assault Amphibian School Battalion to earn the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) of 1833.
Upon completion of his MOS school, he was assigned to 2d Assault Amphibian Battalion, Camp Lejeune, NC from 01 March 2001- 7 July 2004 where he served as an Amphibious Assault Vehicle Crewman, Crew Chief, and Section leader. During his tour, he deployed with Battalion Landing Team 2/2 of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. During his tenure at 2d Assault Amphibian Battalion, he was promoted to the ranks of Lance Corporal, Corporal, and Sergeant.

7 July 2004, he reported to Assault Amphibian School Battalion, Camp Pendleton, CA where he held the billets of Crew Chief, Company Clerk, and Instructor. He also completed his advanced MOS of Amphibious Unit Leaders Course and was promoted to Staff Sergeant.

9 August 2007. He checked into 2d Assault Amphibian Battalion, Camp Lejeune, NC where he deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom followed by another deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. During both deployments, he was a Section Leader. He returned & completed his tour as Platoon Sergeant, was selected for recruiting duty.

3 June 2011. He then attended the Basic Recruiter School and earned the MOS of 8411, checking into Recruiting Sub-Station, Saginaw, MI, Recruiting Station, Lansing, MI. There he served as a canvassing recruiter and earned Recruiting Station Lansing Recruiter of the Year. On 1 August 2012, Sergeant Major King was assigned as the Staff NCO In Charge of RSS Northern MI. During this tour, he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant on 1 August 2013.

Following his tour on recruiting duty, he checked into 3d Assault Amphibian Battalion, Camp Pendleton, CA on 27 May 2013. Where he served as the Platoon Sergeant for 2nd Platoon, Company B. During his tour he deployed on the Unit Deployment Program in support of Landing Force Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training. There he participated in amphibious exercises in Guam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines. Upon his return, he was reassigned to Headquarters and Service Company where he served as Company Logistics Chief until 20 January 2017 when he was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant.

On 13 May 2017, Sergeant Major King reported to Combat Logistics Battalion 7, Combat Logistics Regiment 1, 1st Marine Logistics Group, Twentynine Palms, California where he served as the Company First Sergeant for Transportation Support Company and Headquarters and Services Company. During his tour, he participated in multiple service-level exercises aboard Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, and served as Battalion Sergeant Major on multiple occasions until 6 February 2020.

He then reported to 2d Intelligence Battalion on 26 March 2020, where he served as the Headquarters and Services Company First Sergeant. During his tour, he developed many company-level reforms that led to a reduction in the high-risk personnel and the recognition programs for exemplary Marines. He was promoted to Sergeant Major. On 10 March 2022, Sergeant Major King reported to the I&I Staff, CLB-453 as the I&I Sergeant Major.

His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 3 gold stars and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with a gold star.
